Just wanted to drop a note to mention that GK and I met up again this past Sunday morning at the always pleasant cafe Please and Thank You in downtown Louisville. We continue to detail our plans which are reflected in the document 'Research Notes' on the Resources tab of our page. As we began to map out a timeline of canoe rental we were forced to consider a new issue that may affect our budget dramatically. If we end up canoeing 5-7 nights, at an average rental cost of $50/night we'd be dropping $250-350 on just renting a canoe. There's also the hassle of finding places that rent them, paperwork, and having to return them to a certain place at a certain time. SO, we are no pondering actually borrowing or buying a canoe and then shipping it home (if inflatable) or selling it in Portland at the end of our journey. It might be just as cost effective or negligible considering the convenience of just having a canoe with us.
I've also reached out to a friend at Quest Outdoors about the idea of a sponsorship in exchange for some sort of discount. My friend and old roommate Matt Langley, who lives in Portland, also has recently considered buying a canoe, which would be a really amusing moment of synchronicity. It's the possible luck that Lewis and Clark experienced numerous times on their expedition. He did indicate that we could surely find a buyer in the few days we'll be in Portland either via Craigslist or by taking it to a sporting goods store.
In conversation with Matt, we've also established a firm endpoint which will help us continue in our planning. We will arrive in Portland on June 30th, GK will fly out on the 2nd of July and I will leave on the 4th of July. This also means our first official purchase can be made soon: airline tickets!
Finally, I need to look into what Native American reservations might be open to visitors. If you are a student at school, please consider filling out the form that suggest ideas for adventures and possible questions to ask people out West on our journey. Certainly keep in mind offering questions we could ask Natives too.
Hopefully soon, GK and I will bike to the Falls of the Ohio to take some goofy pictures. Lewis and Clark actually first met up for the expedition in the Louisville area. Clark had been here assembling a team while Lewis was sailing down the Ohio to meet here. The Falls are great fun to wander and it's always exciting to ride a bike across the bridge as cars fly by you going way too fast. Sadly, Korchnak had a flat and my old roommate Syd (who needed to take pictures of the Falls for a story he's writing in local paper Al Día) also ended up with a flat. Next time hopefully we'll get a good ride in and have some silly pics for the blog.
