We started today in Kansas City and left around 10:30. We didn't get a chance to explore the city because of a storm. I don't think we've had a day yet where we didn't have rain. Not being able to explore Kansas City wasn't too big of a deal because there wasn't much Lewis and Clark stuff to see. So we just moved on to the next stop.
Next was the Lewis and Clark State Park in Missouri. I really enjoyed it there. I was able to sit down and draw a Burr Oak leaf while Connor did some recording. It was a very peaceful experience and allowed me to reflect a little on what we've experience so far.
After that we were on to the Missouri River Basin Lewis and Clark Interpretation Center in Nebraska City, NE. In general it was very well done. You can tell they had kids in mind when they designed it because there were a lot of interactive activities. There was also a lot of information on the various plant and animal samples Lewis and Clark collected. There was also a replica keel boat. Which wouldn't be the last one we would see today.
Our last stop of the day was an impromptu trip into Omaha to get a set of small binoculars and a visit to a Lewis and Clark Memorial on Council Bluffs. It was built in 1935 and has a really cool art deco style to it. I really enjoy art deco so it was a welcome surprise. From the top of the bluff you could see for miles with Omaha in the distance.
We finished out the day with a trip to Lewis and Clark State Park in Iowa to camp for the night. Nothing too special about the camp site. It was on a nice oxbow lake. There was another replica keel boat and it was full of bugs. I tried to start a fire, but all the wood was water logged. While I was failing to start the fire Connor set off to cook our meal of white rice. Let's just say he needs some practice with the camping stove.
The most unique part about today was the changing topography. Everything is starting to get flat. It was awesome to see an approaching storm from so far away. You can see the front line and how the clouds slope up with the convicting air. An experience I will use when teaching about storms and weather.
I think I need to do a better job keeping notes while we travel instead of trying to remember everything at night. I hope my next journal is much more detailed. I've also been very moody lately. There have been a few times when I've been short with Connor. I really don't know why. Maybe it's been our pace. I like to take my time and we've been moving a lot. I'm really not sure what it is, but I need to figure it out soon.
